Brief History:

Shigeichi HIRASAWA was born in Kobe, JAPAN on October 2, 1938. He received his B.S. degree in Mathematics and B.E. degree in Electric Communication Engineering both from Waseda University in 1961 and 1963, respectively. He received his D.E. degree in Communication Engineering from Osaka University in 1975.

He joined Mitsubishi Electric Corporation (MELCO) in 1963. He was a technical staff at Central Research Laboratory, MELCO, and worked on developments of full-electronic switching systems and of data transmission systems, and on research of information theory and of error correcting codes. Then he moved to Control System Works at MELCO in 1976, where he worked on developments of computer control systems and computer networks.

In 1981, he joined Waseda University. He has been a Professor at School of Science and Engineering, and has worked on applied information science.
His current research interests include information theory and knowledge information processing.

In 1979, he was a Visiting Scholar at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA) leave on absence from MELCO. He was a Visiting Researcher at Hungarian Academy of Science, Hungary in 1985 (A description of 1985 Budapest Stay (in Japanese)), and a Visiting Professor at the University of Trieste, Italy in 1986. He was also a Visiting Faculty at UCLA in 2002. (A description of 2002 Los Angeles stay (in Japanese) )

He was an Associate Dean of School of Science and Engineering, 1989-1991, the Chairman of the Department, 1993-1995, and was the Vice Dean of the Media Network Center (MNC), Waseda University from 1996 to 2000, and was the Dean of MNC from 2002 to 2006.

He was a Chairman of Information Theory Group, IEICE, 1988-1990, and was a Vice Chairman of Engineering Science Society, IEICE, 1995-1997. He received the Kobayashi Memorial Award and Achievement Award from IEICE, Japan, both in 1995.

In 1996, he was a President of the Society of Information Theory and its applications (SITA), Japan. He has been an IEEE Fellow from 1997, an ACM Professional membership from 1999, an IEICE Fellow from 2001, the honorary member of SITA from 2007, and IEEE Life Fellow from 2008.

He has authored or co-authored more than 50 papers for publication and 250 articles for presentation in information theory, and more then 20 papers for publication and 120 articles for presentation in information systems. He has authored or co-authored five textbooks, and has taken his share in writing four handbooks.
